Jim was born March 24, 1933, in Hudson, Iowa, the son of Roger and Irene (Galbriath) Brees. He attended Hudson schools and graduated from Hudson High School in 1952. He met the love of his life while at school, Sibyl Griffith. The couple was married on April 18, 1953, at the Mississippi River. To this union, one daughter was born.

He was a long time member of the New Hampton Lions Club and the United Methodist Church in New Hampton. Jim also spent time working with wood and doing different carpentry projects. Later in his life, he loved to go antiquing with his wife.
