Betty Jean Tylee was born March 14, 1928, on the Simon family farm, northwest of Lawler, IA, the oldest child of Merle J. and Winifred M. (Hurd) Simon. She received her education at the former Mt. Carmel School in Lawler, where she was captain of the State Champion girls basketball team. Following her graduation in 1945, she continued her education at Mercy Nursing College in Cedar Rapids graduating two years later with a nursing degree. While in Cedar Rapids, she met William Emory Tylee, who was a United States Marine and was at the beginning of his 28 year active duty service. The couple were married on January 28, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton. To this union five children were born. Since Bill was an active duty serviceman, the family lived in Iowa at different times, California and North Carolina. During Betty’s years in New Hampton, she worked as a nurse at both the hospital and clinic. She had a passion for serving and caring for those in need. She was a never ending source of wisdom, love and caregiving for her own family too.

Betty and Bill spent many years later working in property management in Marion, Cedar Rapids, Marshalltown, Minneapolis and several other Midwest cities. The couple officially retired and moved back to New Hampton in 1990 where Betty became instantly involved in the community. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Legion Auxiliary, The Genealogical Society in Chickasaw County, Rosary Society and the Pioneer Cemetery Association.

Survivors include three sons; Terry Tylee of Coralville, Tim (Lori) Tylee of North Liberty, Tom Tylee of New Hampton; one daughter, Tammy (Steven) McCauley of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Mary Virginia Ball of Fredericksburg; ten grandchildren, Brandon (Brianna) Tylee, Steve (Heather) Tylee, Jason (Amanda) Tylee, Shanna (Andy) Tylee, Julie (Brandon) Shull, Stacey Putney, Kiersten (Stephen) Bassett, Cassandra McCauley, Jarod (Monica) Tylee, Anthony Zack (Patti Philips); twenty-six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
