Donald was born September 10, 1921, in
Chickasaw County, Iowa, the son of William and Carrie
(Rausch) Zwanziger. He attended rural school in Chickasaw
County and high school in Nashua.
Don was united in marriage to Marian M.
Richards on March 20, 1941, at the Methodist Parsonage in
Nashua. To this union three children were born, Janet,
Donna and Leonard. Don lived his life around farming. He
farmed in Chickasaw and Butler counties. He operated a
custom corn sheller and had a rural milk (can) route for
area farmers. He worked as a service tech for Richard's
Implement in New Hampton for a number of years. Don and
his wife also owned and operated Don’s Ranch House and
the Dairy Sweet in Nashua. The couple were house parents
for a foster home for boys in Cedar Falls.
Don was involved in the community as a
member of the Big Four Fair Board and was an original
board member for the Nashua Trail Riders and was also a
member of the Nashua United Methodist Church. Don’s
interest and hobbies were horses. He took great pride in
his skills as a horseman. It did not matter if he showed
horses or raced them, and he always seemed to be a winner.
He also loved to play cards and was an avid checkers
player and square dancer. Most of all, Don was loving,
supportive and loyal to his family.
Donald is survived by one son, Leonard
