age 93 of Fredericksburg, Iowa died Saturday March 29,
2008, at the New Hampton Care Center.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 1,
2008, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in
Fredericksburg with Pastor Linda Myren of the Peace
United Church of Christ, Fredericksburg presiding.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery,
Fredericksburg.
Friends may call 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday at the
Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, Fredericksburg.
Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the
funeral home.
If so desired memorials may be made to Hospice of
North Iowa.
Mata was born October 25, 1914, in Black Hawk County,
IA, the daughter of Henry and Katherine (Koehler) Landau. She
received her education in Waterloo, Iowa and graduated
from West High School. On February 26, 1935, at Peace
United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg, she married
Everett W. Steege. To this union four children were
born.
The couple farmed south of Fredericksburg their
entire lives. Everett died on October 9, 2002 and in
July of 2007, Mata moved from their farm to reside at
the New Hampton Care Center. She enjoyed knitting,
crocheting and making ceramics.
Survivors include two sons, Max (Barbara) Steege of
Swisher, IA and Evan (Roselle) Steege of New York Mills,
MN; two daughters, JoAnn (Warren) Reiser of Belmont, WI
and Mary (Bob) Klemp of Fredericksburg; 13
grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ted Steege;
sister-in-law, Ella Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; a son-in-law, Bill Sassmann; three grandsons,
Mike Sassmann, Mark Bloem and Carl Steege; a
great-grandson, Jared Schultz; seven brothers, Jerome,
Bill, Cal, John, Frank, Carl and Everett Landau;
sister, Vera Ladwig.
