Dorothy M. Phelps, age 88 of Nashua, died Sunday evening June 15, 2008, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday June 19, 2008, at the First Congregational Church in Nashua with Rev. David Walsh and Pastor Deborah Gage officiating. Betty Orric will be the organist and lead the congregation in singing “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art”.  Janice Edson will sing “Amazing Grace" and “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua with her grandsons, James Zander Jr, Jason Zander, Michael Keeran, Stacy Appel, Matt Evenson, Charles McNeill, Michael McNeill, Casey Morris and Jeff Broadaway serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Dorothy Marion Phelps was born March 18, 1920, southeast of Nashua, Iowa the daughter of George and Mary (Kraft) Walsh. She graduated from Nashua High School in May of 1937.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Glen T. Phelps July 4, 1939, at McGregor, Iowa on the Chief Blackhawk Riverboat. To this union four children were born. The couple lived in Plainfield for several years before moving to Denver, Iowa. In 1992, after retiring, they later moved to Nashua. Glen passed away June 19, 2003. Dorothy stayed in her home until failing health made it necessary for her to become a resident of Country View in Waterloo.

She was a member of First Congregational Church, served as a 4-H Leader and taught Sunday School at the Plainfield Methodist Church for a number of years. Dorothy loved flowers and gardening. She was a very good cook and enjoyed making big family dinners. She was a great pie maker and everyone loved her Christmas Popcorn Balls. Dorothy was a faithful homemaker and caregiver her entire life.

Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Judy (James) Zander of Charles City, Patty (Larry) Keeran of Waverly and Nancy (Dennis) White of St. James, MO; a son, Glen Phelps, Jr; one brother, Larry “Jim” (Sharon) Walsh of Mapleton, MN; one sister, Kay (Lenos) Connor of Nashua; a brother-in-law, Harry Mckenzie of Aurora, CO; a sister-in-law, Doris Walsh of Altoona, WI; 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her parents; a brother, Arthur Walsh Sr; a sister, Mary Jane McKenzie.
