Leona Francis Meissen, age 79 of Lawler, died Monday morning May 26, 2008, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday May 31, 2008, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz celebrating the Mass.  Joe Scally will serve as lector. Offertory gifts will be presented by Laura Meissen, Michelle Meissen and Keisha Chelberg. Ruth McKone will be the organist accompanying Sherri Achen, vocalist.

Inurnment will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Lawler with grandsons, Joseph Meissen and Christopher Bruns as urn bearers. Honorary bearers are Alice Rasing, Rita Gullord, Gerald Tieskotter, Dennis Tieskotter, John Tieskotter, Dan Tieskotter, Cleo Ericksen and Norman Knutson.

Friends may call 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at church on Saturday.

Leona was born September 12, 1928, on the Tieskotter family farm near Festina, IA, the daughter of John and Cecelia (Schneberger) Tieskotter. She received her education in Ft. Atkinson, IA. 

On May 7, 1960, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, she married John “Jack” Meissen. The couple lived in Lawler their entire married life where they raised their two children, Lyn and Kevin. Leona had worked as a homemaker for the Rusty Kennedy family for over thirty years and in the lunch program at the former Mt. Carmel School in Lawler. She began working as a cook at the Pinicon in 1975, retiring in 2001. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and making candy turtles.  The time she spent with her family was always the treasure in her life.

Survivors include her husband, John “Jack”; one daughter, Lyn (Jeff) Bruns of Lawler; one son, Kevin (Denise) Meissen of Blaine, MN; four grandchildren, Laura Meissen, Michelle Meissen, Joseph Meissen and Christopher Bruns;  one brother, Andrew (Bernadette) Tieskotter of Little Turkey, IA; two sisters, Elvira “Vera” Tierney of Cedar Falls, IA and Marian (Juel) Knutson of New Hampton; a brother-in-law, Joseph L. (Virginia) Meissen of Guttenberg, IA; three sisters-in-law, Sr. Emiliana Meissen of Dubuque, Barbara Meissen of Valders, WI and Adella Tieskotter of Lawler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bernadette Kruse; two brothers, Wilfred Tieskotter and Roman Tieskotter; three brothers-in-law, Joseph Tierney, Andrew Kruse and Raymond Meissen; two sisters-in-law, Regina Tieskotter and Rose Klapper.
