Dorothy M. Johnson,
age 92 of Nashua, died Sunday evening June 15, 2008, at
the Cedar Health Care Center in Charles City.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m.
Friday, June 20, 2008, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth
Funeral Home in Nashua with Pastor Gary Van Wert
officiating. Betty Orric will be the organist and play
“Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross”.
Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery
in Waverly with Jackie Wilken, Andy Wilken, Jerry
Johnson, Steve Troyna and Kory Nelson serving as
pallbearers. Dorothy’s granddaughters, Sherry Wilken,
Kerry Kestner, DeAnna Nelson and Heidi Renowski will be
honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be Friday morning
from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth
Funeral home in Nashua. Memorials may be directed to the
family.
Dorothy Mae Johnson was born February
22, 1916, at home on a farm east of Nashua, Iowa the
daughter of Ivan B. and Frances P. (Smith) Riggs. The
family lived on farms around the Nashua area. She
graduated from Nashua High School in 1934.
Dorothy was united in marriage to
Mervin Kenneth Johnson on August 11, 1934, at the Nashua
Methodist Church parsonage. To this union three children
were born. The couple farmed for 15 years and then moved
to the Leech Lake area where they managed a resort from
1957 to 1978. The family then moved to Hackinsack,
MN. Dorothy worked part-time as a nurse’s aide
at a nursing home until 1980. After moving to Nashua she
worked as a foster grandparent for a number of years.
Mervin passed away on March 19, 1991. Dorothy continued
to live in Nashua until failing health made in necessary
for her to become a resident of Cedar Health in Charles
City.
She is survived by her daughter,
Marlys Fohlin of Walker, MN; a sister, Leona Carter of
Nashua; 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 10
great-great grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin;
two sons, Robert in 1956 and Kenneth in 1986; her
parents; a brother, William Riggs and a sister, Ethel
Lantz.
