Leland LeRoy Head was born May 8, 1927,
near Plainfield, in Butler County, Iowa, the son of Ralph
and Ruth (Allen) Head. LeRoy graduated in 1944 from
Plainfield High school in a class of twelve students. He
enjoyed the game of baseball all through school and played
the centerfield position. Following graduation he played
on the town teams of Nashua and Plainfield. As a
young adult, LeRoy showed such talent that he was even
scouted by the minor league “Red Sox” team.
In 1947, LeRoy was united in marriage
to Donna Teft for 25 years. To this union three daughters
were born. He began his nearly 60 year farming career that
year in southern rural Nashua. LeRoy served on the
Nashua Equity Co-op and Five-Star Co-op Board of Directors
for over 20 years.
In 1978, he married LaVonne Plautz and
was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles
City, until her death in 2003.
He always enjoyed traveling in his
Winnebago and spending winters in Arizona with his friends
from the Nashua area. LeRoy was especially proud of his
antique car and showed it in many parades. This huge
Hawkeye fan rarely missed a televised game and collected
lots of memorabilia of the team. He always enjoyed a good
joke and conversations with friends in the community.
He is survived by three daughters,
Barbara Garbes of Des Moines, Debra (Tom) Clark of Osage
and Linda Sue Baker of Charles City; three
grandchildren, Tracie Garbes of Des Moines, Adam
Clark of Nora Springs and Dustin Clark of Cedar Falls; a
stepson, Brett Plautz of Missouri; and special
friend, Ms Gerda Thran.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, Ralph and Ruth.
