Richard "Dick" C. Brown, age 84
of New Hampton, died Tuesday morning May 13, 2008, at the
New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m.
Friday, May 16, 2008, at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s
Center with Msgr. Carl Schmitt celebrating the Mass. The
pall will be placed by his children. Lector for the
service will be Bill O'Neill. Ann Bennett will be
the organist accompanying Mary Beth Ovel as cantor
and the Holy Family Resurrection
Choir. Presenting the offertory gifts will be his
grandchildren.
Interment with military honors conducted by the New
Hampton American Legion Post #38 and V.F.W. Post #5238
will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton. Pallbearers
are grandsons, Corey Knight, Colin Egan, Luke Brown, Adam
brown, Brian Quinn, Andy Quinn, Jordan Benike and Jeremy
Benike. Honorary pallbearers are Gerald Brown and William
Brown.
Friends may call 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Hugeback
& Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there
will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary and a 6:00 p.m. parish
scripture service. Visitation continues 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Friday at the funeral home.
Richard Cyril Brown was born March 6, 1924, in Olivia,
MN, the son of James William and Mary Briget (Ryan) Brown.
He attended grade school and high school in Olivia,
graduating in 1941. Richard was inducted into the United
States Marine Corp. on January 28, 1943, and honorably
discharged on January 30, 1946.
On August 17, 1949, in Olivia, MN, he was united
in marriage to Mary Jo Allen. To this union eleven
children were born. Richard again served in the United
States Army from December 26, 1950 until he was honorably
discharged on December 22, 1952. After his service
to his country Richard attended college at St. Thomas
University in St. Paul, MN. He received his
engineering degree by correspondence.
The couple initially lived in Olivia, MN where he
worked ten years for Chamberlains as a surveyor and then
moved to Tipton, IA, where he received his first county
engineer position in Cedar County. In 1962, the Browns
moved to New Hampton where he was county engineer.
After 1974, Richard became county engineer in Wabasha,
County, MN. The family lived in Lake City until 1977
when he became county engineer in Howard County, IA,
retiring in 1986. In his free time he enjoyed golfing,
hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by four sons, Tim Brown of St. Paul, MN,
Pete (Dawn) Brown of New Hampton, Matt (Cindy) Brown of
Maple Park, IL and Andy Brown of New Hampton; seven
daughters, Mary Beth Brown (Tubby Anderson) of Lawler, IA,
Sarah (Chuck) Egan of Kaukauna, WI, Molly (Luigi)
Millacardi of Chicago, Gina Brown (Charlie Vavra) of St.
Ansgar, IA, Monica (Jim) Quinn of West Salem, WI, Lucy
Benike of Chatfield, MN, and Megan (Chris) Edwards of
Arvada, CO; 19 grandchildren and 7
great-grandchildren; two brothers, William (Judy)
Brown of Two Harbors,MN and Gerald (Karon) Brown of Champlin, MN.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo on
October 14, 2007; his parents; two brothers, Bob and
Bernie Brown; and a sister, Dodi Olsen.
